Message from the Chairman

“A decade has passed since the dawn of the 21st century. The new millennium has ushered in the age of Information and Communications Technology. At the same time it has brought new challenges of global proportions. These challenges have to be faced not only at the global level but also by each country and each individual. At the turn of the century Malaysia was making a paradigm shift from a production based economy to a knowledge based economy. The country was intensifying efforts to develop high tech industries and to make IT the catalyst for growth in the 21st century”


A knowledge based economy or K- economy is driven by financial capital, knowledge capital and social capital. Of these, knowledge is the most crucial. Hence, knowledge and the ability to use knowledge in new ways i.e. innovation are very important for continuous progress in such an economy. An educated and skilled human resource would then become a very valuable asset for the country. Hence, preparing a highly skilled and knowledgeable workforce is an important task. This is a work in progress because of the rapid changes in the technological field.

In the last ten years the world around us has changed tremendously. Keeping pace with these changes is a major challenge. In the next ten years, it can be expected that the world will change even further. In order for us to face these challenges we need to constantly upgrade ourselves. Each individual needs to realize the importance of acquiring knowledge. Life long learning must be made a part and parcel of oneself. When there is a mind set change at the individual level a change at the community level will follow naturally.

In this light, higher education facilitates this process. It fosters the moulding of a new identity and helps prepare future leaders for the community and the nation.

Tertiary Education

The establishment of tertiary level technological institutions such as TAFE College Seremban is to prepare workers with specific skills and knowledge from among Malaysian Indians. TAFE College provides a wide array of training opportunities at the certificate and diploma levels and helps establish a career path in skill based occupations. The fee structure that the college imposes is at an affordable level to most Indian youths. It has also enhanced its curriculum so that it can remain competitive with other technical institutions that offer similar courses. The college has produced more than 35,000 graduates since its formation in 1972.

AIMST University was set up to create a permanent learning infrastructure for the community. The opportunities to pursue higher education will ensure that there is a continuous production of professionals, semi-professionals and knowledgeable workers who will be an asset to the nation. The setting up of the AIMST University is an achievement that every Malaysian Indian should be proud of. It has produced 1,025 graduates since its first convocation in 2008.


MIED supports the availability of tertiary education by providing scholarships and educational loans. In 2010, two cheque presentation ceremonies were held to hand out loans amounting to RM 2,025,137.10 to 253 students. Since the time of its formation in 1984, it has continued to help needy Malaysian Indian youths to continue their studies at colleges and Universities both locally and abroad.  With better paper qualification these youths would definitely be more in demand in the job market. Their earning power would be higher. The economic status of their family will also be better. This in turn will augur well for the country and its economy.

At this juncture, the effort put in by the past and present employees of MIED must be commended. Without their persistence and dedication to adhere to the institution’s vision, mission and values MIED would not have been so successful for the past 27 years. At present our 25 committed staff are carrying on the torch.

At MIED everyone believes in these values:

The staffs have always believed in putting the client first. They have made every effort to keep the Indian community updated with the wealth of information on MIED activities. My special thanks to the staff for their dedication and tireless efforts.

Tamil Schools

In our enthusiasm to make tertiary education available to the community, we have not neglected the Tamil schools. The Tamil language and the Tamil schools are an integral part of the Malaysian society. It is a historical and cultural heritage of our community and of all Malaysians in general and must be preserved and enriched at all cost. There have been many changes in the infrastructure requirements and quality of education in Tamil schools. However, there is still much room for improvement.

MIED continues to play a part in improving the quality of education in Tamil schools. In 2010, it organized a workshop for the preparation of UPSR examination modules. The modules were distributed at the Module Book Launch Ceremony. A total of 17,214 copies of these modules were distributed to all 2010 UPSR candidates in Tamil schools through the respective state MIC branches. 2000 copies of teacher’s guides were also printed and distributed to the teachers.

The President’s Achievers’ Award was also presented to Tamil schools and their students with excellent results in the 2010 UPSR examination. These awards are presented with the hope that more Tamil schools and their students would be inspired to emulate the standards set by these high achievers.

Looking Forward

Upon reflection on the past year, it must be said that MIED has continued its good work in the face of many challenges. It has managed to implement all its regular programs successfully. This speaks volumes on the resourcefulness of the people responsible for its day to day operation.

MIED remains in the forefront as a loan provider of study loans to members of the Malaysian Indian community seeking such assistance for further education.

It has achieved its vision to be the premier source of information, financing and assistance to help socially and economically disadvantaged Indian students realize their educational and career dreams.

We remain ever hopeful and optimistic that this establishment will be capable of meeting future challenges and continue to strive towards academic empowerment of the Malaysian Indian community.
